Ward 7’s new modern, eco-friendly recreation center debuts

The $17 million facility offers a pool, demonstration kitchen, and eco-friendly features

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has unveiled the Kenilworth Recreation Center, a brand new, modern recreation center in Ward 7. This facility is home to the D.C. Department of Parks & Recreation’s (DPR) largest fitness room, senior lounge, boxing room, multi-purpose room, and the largest, most innovative demonstration kitchen in their inventory.

Located at 1300 44th Street NE in Ward 7’s Kenilworth neighborhood, this new $17 million facility offers the twenty-first outdoor pool in Washington, D.C. There is also a gymnasium inside as well as support spaces, locker rooms, and senior and teen rooms. The building was designed to be eco-friendly and energy-efficient, while boasting the DPR’s first ever electric vehicle charging station.

According to the Department of General Services (DGS) website, the project was designed by Bell Architects and is working towards a LEED Gold certification. Construction started in September 2015.

In a statement, Department of General Services Director Gillis said, “We are excited about this project because it is a continuing example of our commitment to elevating the quality of life for District residents. This new recreation center offers a safe, attractive, and energy efficient place for members of the community to enjoy.”
