North End’s North Square undergoing major renovation

Boston plans to spend $2.5 million overhauling the North End’s North Square outside of the Paul Revere House.

The work will involve replacing all of the cobblestones, making it more accessible for people with physical challenges, installing sharper lighting, aligning street grades more precisely, and resetting nautical chains that border the plaza.

The refurbishment—the first for North Square, which dates from at least the mid-17th century, since the 1970s—will also include four sculptures meant to reflect the surrounding North End’s history.

Work is set to wrap by the end of 2018.
